After a convincing performance, TBV Lemgo were able to assert themselves against HBW Balingen-Weilstetten.
Before the game much had been spoken about an alleged crisis and its implications, on the pitch TBV had responded suitably. At 26:20 (16:9) Volker Mudrow's team asserted themselves against HBW Balingen-Weilstetten showing a good performance during long periods of the game. This time, in contrast to so often in recent games, TBV were well involved from the start. Florian Kehrmann and Michael Binder took a 2:0 lead, which the home team were initially able to equalise. The only time that Balingen took the lead then followed at 2:3 (7th minute) as Felix Lobedank was able to take an unhindered throw. But TBV soon found their game again both in defence and in attack, and in the 18th minute lead for the first time with a three goal difference through the powerful Holger Glandorf.
The entire body language of the team was totally different to when they played for the cup, the team wanted to win with all their might - and they were able to do so. In the 23rd minute Balingen fans started hoping after Temelkov was able to beat the strapping Martin Galia from the penalty spot to make it 10:8. But time after time double hits from Glandorf and Svavaarson enabled TBV to lead by six goals at 14:8 and the power difference became evident. In the first half TBV were even able to allow themselves the luxury of missing two penalties as Mark Schmetz and Michael Kraus both missed with their throws from the penalty spot. Rolf Brack tried - almost as accustomed - to create surprises with the 7th field player but the measures rarely came to fruition. Two seconds were left to play as TBV got the chance once more with a free throw to put the game away. And now even simple things worked: Rolf Hermann rose above his block and fired the ball into the net at 16:9.
After the break, however, Balingen came out of the changing rooms more concentrated. Mueller and Birkle were able to cut the lead to 16:11 in the 34th minute; TBV did not score until the 35th minute. At 17:14 the crowd came alive again. In contrast to previous games, TBV were totally unimpressed and in the 40th minute Michael Binder was successful in taking the score to 20:14. Martin Galia continued to provide the necessary support behind a massive and flexible defence - TBV had full control of the game. Halfway through the second period the comforting six goal lead at 21:15 was still there, TBV were heading for the hoped-for away win in Balingen where, in the past, TBV had so often struggled.
Even when once or twice in the attack they had tried too quickly to score the goal, TBV were able to keep the lead constantly high thanks to a brilliant defence in top form. At this point, the time penalty ratio was unfavourable for the Lemgo side at 6:3 but HBW were unable to take any decisive advantages from having more players on the court. Balingen had to fight hard for every goal. In the opposing team, Holger Glandorf in particular was able to get the frustration off his chest: at 24:18 he managed to score his ninth goal already. The only reproach one could make was that TBV did not take an even bigger lead over Balingen.
With six minutes left to play Volker Mudrow brought on Tamas Mocsai who, until then, had not played at all. The Hungarian showed his appreciation immediately with a goal to make it 25:19 (55th minute). The TBV could afford to take the pace out of the game relatively early on and bring the game safely to an end. They can now go into the national team break with new self-confidence before they are hosts to TV Grosswallstadt on November 4th in the Lipperland Arena.
Comments on the game:
Volker Mudrow: Of course, we are very satisfied with the two points, because before the game we were quite depressed after losing the cup tie at Bad Schwartau, which for us means a medium-sized catastrophe. We were not very self-confident coming here to Balingen. The most important thing is that today the team has shown that they are a team, that they have fought for every ball for 60 minutes. For that reason, my opinion is that we deserved the win, but we also have to acknowledge that Balingen never gave up, and that distinguishes the team. For that reason it was also important that we were good in defence and therefore able to control the game. However,, I do have one piece of criticism: to concede only 20 goals on the road, that is very good. However, in the second half there were four or five rebounds that we didn't get. I expect us to secure these too otherwise we make life unnecessarily difficult for ourselves.
Dr. Rolf Brack: From all the defeats we have had until now this one was the clearest because our attack found no way through. TBV’s 6:0 defence was well positioned so that right from the centre position we had little chance of scoring. Even with more players on the court we could not manage to exploit the advantage, sometimes we did not even get to take a shot. That is why, after a super cup tie, today we have clearly been shown our limits, they were a different quality opponent. We were able to start the second half positively but strong players like Kubes and Svavarson as well as a good keeper at the back were just too many obstacles, and we just have to accept that today.
