TBV Lemgo have won the season opener against SC Magdeburg with 38:30 (21:16).
At the premiere they were convincing at all levels and, after the failed qualification for the Champions League, reported back impressively in front of 4,065 spectators in the Lipperland Arena. New signing Ferenc Ilyés scored the first goal of TBV's new season after just 90 seconds. A saved penalty by Carsten Lichtlein who started in goal for TBV and two goals by Holger Glandorf took the TBV lead to 3:0 after four minutes. Jens Bechtloff, Michael Kraus, who swapped with Daniel Kubes in the defence, Florian Kehrmann and Sebastian Preiss completed the starting seven. TBV's defence was fully alert from the start. With the fans behind them, the team of Volker Mudrow, their new coach, showed themselves to be highly motivated.
4:13 minutes had been played before Magdeburg scored their first goal from a seven metre penalty through Yves Grafenhorst. Just over a minute later Lichtlein had to fish the ball out of the net for a second time after a shot by Bartosz Jurecki, before, in the ensuing minutes, TBV started to overun Michael Biegler's team. After three goals by Kraus and Bechtloff's first goal, TBV went ahead at 7:2. On 12 minutes the visitor's coach, Biegler, took his time-out. But even after that SCM found no way to combat TBV's rapid play.
Goals from Martin Strobel and Kraus once again, TBV took the score to 11:4 to lead by seven goals for the first time. Three Magdeburg goals in succession by Dennis Krause, Bennet Wiegert and Grafenhorst with a penalty compelled Trainer Mudrow to take his time-out after 20:27 minutes had been played. SCM battled and, in the meantime, were able to cut the lead back by three goals but by the end of the first half TBV Lemgo had again taken a decisive and well-deserved lead over the visitors. With the half-time score at 21:16, the teams headed for the changing rooms.
After the half-time break, TBV continued to control the game and their opponent. Carsten Lichtlein defence was highly focused and the attack also played noticeably better. Until the 47th minute Kubes & Co allowed only six goals to get past them, the score at 30:22 clearly showed TBV's dominance. Even when Ferenc Ilyés was sent to the sin-bin twice in succession for petty fouls, TBV managed to keep hold of the reins. 50:47 minutes had been played with the score at 34:25 for TBV when SCM coach Michael Biegler took his second-half time-out. Unstoppable and at an enormous pace, TBV had raced away.
Even then, SCM could not turn around the game. Every mistake SCM made was exploited mercilessly, at 36:27 Mark Schmetz was up and away. In the closing minutes, Carsten Lichtlein who had been brilliant up to that point made way in goal for Jasper Larsson. In the end, TBV Lemgo won with a well-deserved 38:30.
Michael Biegler: For me as National League coach it was alarming that TBV missed out on the Champions League qualification over the weekend - and as SCM’s coach even more so. Because it was clear to me that the TBV would be able to move up a gear. Therefore I had expected this result. Today I have seen some good things from my team but also things that I don’t like. We just have to find our way through the games because some training situations cannot be demonstrated. We clearly lost the goalkeeper duel, we have to admit that, but I have always said that Eijlers and Müller must become a good team so they can be a good support for us.
Volker Mudrow: I only arrived here this afternoon so I cannot and do not want to say much about the game. The objective was to win the game, no matter how. These are all great guys who fought well. I am, of course, happy that we won the game. One goal difference would have been enough, it is a nice bonus that in the end it was eight.
