A dearly bought home victory

Strong defence performance secures the win for TBV

TBV Lemgo wins 25:20 against the visitors from Grosswallstadt. Unfortunately, Jens Bechtloff was injured again.

TBV Lemgo won the game against the former champion, TV Grosswallstadt, 25:20 (13:10). TBV got off to a bad start and only got up to speed with difficulties and were two goals down after just three minutes before Holger Glandorf put the ball in the left top corner of the net. Ferenc Ilyés scored two minutes later from the back area to bring the score to 2:3. Florian Kehrmann, Michael Kraus, Vignir Svavarsson and Jens Bechtloff who reported back after being out for weeks because of an injury and Martin Galia in goal to complete the starting seven.

The TBV fought to get back in the game and Ferenc Ilyés equalised after twelve minutes to make it 5:5. In front of 3,878 spectators, Florian Kehrmann scored after snatching a rebound from the crossbar to start a counterattack and take the lead at 6:5. Two minutes later Svavarsson extended the lead to 7:5 before Grosswallstadt could equalise again with a double strike by pivot Jens Tiedke at 7:7. After a quarter of an hour Martin Strobel replaced Michael Kraus and Mark Schmetz relieved Florian Kehrmann. Glandorf scored the 8:7, Steffen Weinhold equalised before Glandorf again went ahead at 9:8.

At 10:8 as Bechtloff scored with a counterattack after a lovely pass from Galia, the crowd got the message. Supported by the Lipperland Arena, the TBV managed to keep the lead over the remaining eight minutes of the first half and went into the break leading 13:10. The downside of the initial ignition weighed heavily: Bechtloff was injured shortly after by a clumsy action of one of the opposing players during a counter and had to sit out for the rest of the game. Having just returned to the team, the left winger broke a metacarpal in the right hand and will be out for several weeks.

After the break Rolf Hermann came back on in the right back position and showed to be fully concentrated from the start, managed to raise the lead to 15:11 (34 min.) but missed a few good opportunities that could have been decisive in putting the game out of the reach of the visitors. So TVG stayed in the game at least but in the 39th minute it was Svavarsson who spiralled the lead even higher for TBV to 18:13 and a five goal lead. In the 42nd minute, however, TVG had cut the deficit to 3 goals, Weinhold made it 18:15. Michael Kraus who looked rather handicapped due to a strained stomach muscle, gave Ilyés a break in the back area, Glandorf relieved Hermann. Five minutes later the scoreboard had only climbed to 19:15, a strong Martin Galia kept everything out but in the attack things were not going smoothly much of the time. In the 49th minute it was 19:16, Ilyés came back in the attack Kraus to the centre, Svavarsson relieved the replacement pivot Kehrmann. The attack continued to be ineffective in this phase, after 52:17 minutes it was Michael Kraus who finally scored with a super standing throw and took the score to 20:16 for the TBV.

Schmetz scored a seven metre penalty after Svavarsson was fouled, Kehrmann scored from the right back area. In the closing minutes, TBV kept the upper hand. Ten seconds to play and the strongly playing Svavarsson received a two-minute time penalty against Sverre Andreas Jakobssen, Schmetz scored from the penalty spot seven seconds before the final siren, his third penalty of the game and made the final score 25:20.

Comments on the game:

Peter David: Congratulations to Lemgo, that was really a very extraordinary game. The result does not really fit the run of the game. We clearly lost the game in attack. Just as in Minden where we also had problems, it is a new situation for us. We were not rewarded for a good defence. Mattias Andersson held an excellent 56% of the shots, Martin Galia 50%, which, unfortunately was also very good. The second decisive point were our ball losses, we had ten against only four for Lemgo. We wanted to achieve more today. Now we just have to wait for an away win.

Volker Mudrow: I am very satisfied, especially with the defence. In Balingen we conceded only 20 goals and today also. That shows a good defence performance. The interaction between keeper and defence is good and I am delighted. However, we need to work on a quicker play forward, the first and second waves are not how I imagine they should be. When attacking I expect that we play the moves with more fervour, it is often too static. Starting tomorrow, we will be working on these tasks.
