Towards the end the TBV Lemgo makes it thrilling once again after a comfortable lead and a sovereign game for long periods.
However, at the finish the TBV wins with 25-23 (14-8) and says goodbye with a psychologically important victory for the break of the European Championship. Galia started in the goal, Ilyés and Kubes covered the centre positions, Glandorf and Strobel the back court positions, Schmetz and Bechtloff the wings. In the attack Ilyés and Kubes changed with Svavarsson and Kraus, who also scored the 1-0. Right from the start the TBV was presenting itself in the Bördelandhalle highly motivated and finally wanted to gain the next win after three defeats in a row.
Two goals of Svavarsson provided the lead for the TBV (3-1), Glandorf increased in minute 7 to 4-1. After the 5-1 of Svavarsson SC Magdeburg coach Michael Biegler took his timeout after 8:33 minutes were played. Hereafter his team still struggled against the TBV, whose defence was in top form. The few chances they had were thwarted by the strong performing Martin Galia. In the 12th minute Van Olphen could score for the host only for the second time. Beforehand the TBV didn’t use a clear-cut chance, but Strobel immediately increased the result to 6-2 with an energetic individual performance.
In the following Magdeburg again and again tried to score through Jurecki, the pivot, which was initially met with success. However, twice in a row the SCM throwers failed at the penalty spot against Carsten Lichtlein, who was introduced for this situation. In the middle of the first half the TBV was in the lead with 7-3. Glandorf scored the 8-3, Kubes the 9-3 (17.) – a fastbreak goal – the TBV was clearly the better team. The SCM could reach the 9-5 till the 20th minute, because the TBV anewly missed some easy chances. A technical fault then caused the 9-6. Though the strong effort of the defence could still secure the lead and the TBV could enlarge its score to 11-6 in the 24th minute. In minute 29 at a result of 13-7 Lichtlein saved already the third penalty attempt. The German national goalkeeper presented himself in the nick of time in extraordinary constitution and formed together with Galia an outstanding duo. The only little blemish of the first 30 minutes was the score of Robert Weber, who basically in the last minute managed to score through a free throw around the TBV defence, who was attuned to a pass. Yet the lead with 6 goals was absolutely well-deserved.
Svavarsson could score the first hit after the break, which was at the same time his 4th goal. Two goals in a row of the SCM narrowed the result to 15-10 (34.) . The next unprepared shot of the TBV attack got the hosts in the possession of the ball and they again drew nearer to 15-11 through a spectacular goal of Jurecki. Kraus could make the lead a bit more comfortable with his successful penalty, nevertheless the attack attempts in this phase of the game weren’t as forceful anymore and the SCM sniffed their chance. Rojewski scored the 16-12 (37.). Mocsai achieved the 17-12 with a nice goal out of the back area. Volker Mudrow now changed the defence, Kraus concentrated on Tönnesen and promptly Bechtloff could score with a fastbreak and threw the ball over Eijlers in the net to 18-12 (38.).
Afterwards Grafenhorst lined up at the penalty spot, moreover Kubes had to leave the field for two minutes. Lichtlein entered for the penalty and Grafenhorst’s nerves broke down, he only hit the post. When Kraus increased the score to 19-12 (41.) whilst playing short-handed, it seemed that the TBV could get back to shallow waters again. A time discipline against Schmetz had the consequence that Florian Kehrmann despite a nasal bone fracture put himself once more into the team’s service.
In the 46th minute the SCM in superior number came nearer to 21-17. Now the TBV had to keep his rhythm. Kraus kept calm at the penalty spot and afterwards Glandorf hurled the ball in the net to 23-17 (49.). At the score of 24-18 Volker Mudrow called his timeout after 51:30 minutes of the game. His team let pass the chance for a higher lead, which was definitely possible at this point. After Tönnesen’s 24-19 Lichtlein replaced Galia in the goal, but all of a sudden the game became tight. In the 54th minute after two technical faults the SCM had caught up to 24-21. In the defence Magdeburg turned their attention to Glandorf, but Schmetz provided the important 25-21 with an impressive straight shot. As the SCM had the opportunity for the 25-23 (57.), Lichtlein countered brilliantly against Rojewski. Though in the attack hardly anything worked, it was Rojewski again, who made it 25-23 (58.) and so the SCM had almost caught up.
The TBV risked the next simple shot and Eijlers was on the spot. After 58:38 minutes Michael Biegler called his timeout. Indeed, the game was on the verge of turning, after the TBV acted so superior over such a long time. 56 seconds before the end Theuerkauf lined up for a penalty showdown against Carsten Lichtlein – and “Lütti” countered once more phenomenally. A Kempa pass didn’t find its way to Bechtloff, but Lichtlein finally secured the victory for the TBV.
